Are our children ready to learn as they enter school?

We hope that when our children begin school they will have developed psychologically to the point where they can benefit from the school experience. But how do we know whether children have reached this point? We have a means of assessing the child’s readiness to learn. It is called the EDI –

 The Early Development Instrument

The EDI is an assessment of the child’s development done by the senior kindergarten student’s teacher. She or he answers a series of questions about the child based on their experience with the child. This assessment looks at development in five domains.

The results are collected for each neighbourhood in our area and these results can be used by agencies to plan services for children and their families in that neighbourhood. This planning, of course, incorporates other additional information. This instrument is designed to provide information about how well communities are doing as a whole and is not intended to provide information about individual children. It is intended to identify both strengths and weaknesses. It is based on the idea that communities influence all children and that providing services to all children helps all – both the normally developing child and the slower developing child.

This assessment has been performed twice in our area in 2006 and 2009. Children in our area – Perth Middlesex – generally received scores that are typical for Ontario children – with some exceptions.

In Perth County we have results for these communities for 2006 and 2009.

In our part of Middlesex County we have results for these communities for 2006. Results for 2009 are forthcoming.

If you wish to find out how children did in our neighbourhoods contact Ken Clarke, the Data Analysis Coordinator for the Ontario Early Years Centres of Perth-Middlesex at kenc@pcfk.on.ca.
