Some Activities to do on Cold Winter Days

Cooking with Kids

Edible Snowman

Need: flour tortillas, oil

Heat tortillas so they are flexible. Cut them just like you would make paper snowflakes. Fry tortillas until crisp. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar.

English Muffin Pizzas

Need: English muffins, sauce & toppings

Split English muffins, spread on some sauce, add your favourite toppings and bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until cheese has melted.

Crafts with Kids

Puff Painting

Mix together ˝ cup shaving cream (Foamy) with 2 tbsp white glue.  Add food coloring if desired.  Paint a picture with this “paint”, The more you use the puffier your picture will be.  Paint stays puffed  up when it dries. Let it dry for 1 hour.

Bird Feeders

Spread pinecones with peanut butter.  Roll in bird seed and hang outside.

String Cheerio's on brightly coloured yarn and hang it outside for the birds to eat.

Winter Songs and Fingerplays for Kids

Both sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Little Snowman

In your scarf and funny hat (Touch head)
Orange carrot for a nose (Touch nose)
Frosty head and frosty toes (Touch head and toes)
Little snowman, be my friend (Touch heart)
Please don’t melt till winter’s end.

Snowflakes
Snowflakes, snowflakes, dance around
Snowflakes, snowflakes, touch the ground.
Snowflakes, snowflakes, in the air
Snowflakes, snowflakes, everywhere.
Snowflakes, snowflakes, dance around
Snowflakes, snowflakes, touch the ground.

Games with Kids

Freeze Tag

Turn on some music and dance around. Instruct the children to freeze when the music stops. At various points during the song, stop the music. See how quickly the children can stop!

Pin the Nose on a Snowman

Make a large snowman to hang on the wall.  Make several carrots out of construction paper for the children to “pin” (or tape) on the snowman.  Children can be blindfolded or not.
