Parenting and Early Literacy
touch - cuddle - read - love - grow - talk respond - hold - play - nurture There is no parenting school... and there is no all-inclusive, comprehensive book that tells you everything you need to know... yet everybody seems to have an opinion about what is best for you and your children. Who do you trust? How do you know what is best for you? your family? your child? We may not be able to tell you everything you need to know, but we can help by providing you with clear information gathered through professional training and years of experience working with children of all ages. Everyone loves their kids and wants to do what is best. We love children too and can help you be the best parent you can. You will be able to find lots of information here on our web site, but there are many other good resources. For parenting books and videos visit an Ontario Early Years Centre, your local library or Perth Care For Kids. Some important things to remember: Love your kids - don't just tell them, show them with simple gestures of appreciation, gratitude and respect.
Get involved - "children need to know that their parents are actively experiencing life with them, not just taking them along for the ride." (from "10 Common Mistakes Good Parents Make and How to Avoid Them" by Kevin Steede PhD.)
Be consistent - kids will make mistakes but through positive, consistent discipline parents can use these opportunities to teach important life lessons and values.
Be a good role model - children respect and idolize their parents. You want your children to be polite, kind and generous - so demonstrate these qualities in your own life. If you want your child to be a strong student - read a book, use good grammar and get organized - your child will probably develop these good habits too.
